Esa-Pekka Salonen is a Finnish conductor and composer from Helsinki who trained at the Sibelius Academy and began his international conducting career in the 1980s, working primarily in contemporary and orchestral classical music. He has championed contemporary composers, incorporated technology and collaborative programmes into orchestral projects, and maintained a dual career conducting major orchestras and composing orchestral and chamber works that often explore timbre and rhythm.
