Symphonie fantastique is a programme symphony by French composer Hector Berlioz, composed and first performed in 1830. It features expanded orchestral forces, vivid orchestration and a recurring idée fixe representing the protagonist's obsession, using a programme of episodic movements to depict an artist's passions, visions and nightmares and influencing the development of Romantic orchestral and programme music.
