Digital Underground are an American hip hop collective formed in Oakland, California, in 1987, emerging from the West Coast hip hop and Bay Area underground scenes. Known for a party-oriented, funk-infused sound that made extensive use of P-Funk sampling, alter-egos, skits and theatrical performances, their work evolved to combine live instrumentation and layered sampling, contributing to the crossover between late 1980s underground rap and early 1990s West Coast styles.
