Pharoah Sanders is an American jazz tenor saxophonist born in Little Rock, Arkansas, who emerged in the New York avant-garde scene in the 1960s and is closely associated with spiritual and free jazz. His playing employed extended techniques such as overblowing and multiphonics and blended modal structures, collective improvisation and non-Western rhythms and textures, evolving from intense free-form exploration to more lyrical, meditative compositions and playing a role in the development of spiritual jazz.
