Fidelio is the only opera by Ludwig van Beethoven, first premiered in 1805. The work blends elements of the German singspiel and rescue-opera traditions with Beethoven's orchestral and vocal writing, employing dramatic ensembles, choruses and overtures to express themes of personal liberty and justice and occupying a distinctive place in his output as his sole operatic composition bridging Classical forms and early Romantic expression.
