Spoken Word

Spoken Word emerged in the mid-20th century, primarily in the United States, as a literary form that decided it would quite like to be a performer too, often using rhythmical speech instead of conventional singing. It sounds a bit like a poetry recital mixed with a coffee shop vibe, where the artist rattles off words so beautifully that you almost forget they're not quite singing, unless they are, in which case you might be very confused. This genre has influenced everything from hip hop to political activism, proving that words really can be mightier than the sword, especially if delivered with enough flair.
