John Giorno was an American poet and performance artist from New York City who began his career in the early 1960s, working at the intersection of spoken word, performance poetry and experimental sound. He developed recorded-poetry and interdisciplinary projects that merged spoken-word delivery with electronic and avant-garde music, founding Giorno Poetry Systems to distribute collaborative recordings and connecting poetry with wider countercultural and multimedia art scenes.
