Joy Division are an English post-punk band formed in Salford, Greater Manchester in 1976 who recorded for Factory Records and produced material characterised by sparse, atmospheric arrangements and lyrics addressing alienation, depression and existential themes. The band disbanded in 1980 following the death of their lead singer, after which the remaining members formed New Order.
