Otha Turner and The Rising Star Fife and Drum Band

Otha Turner and the Rising Star Fife and Drum Band are a Mississippi fife-and-drum ensemble formed in the mid-20th century that perform blues, folk and traditional African American music rooted in hill country and rural community practices. Their sound combines wooden fifes, snare and bass drum rhythms, call-and-response vocals and dance-oriented grooves drawn from West African-derived rhythmic patterns and field hollers, and the group is associated with preserving regional fife-and-drum traditions within social and ceremonial community contexts.
