Faust is an opera in five acts by Charles-François Gounod, first performed in 1859. Musically it exemplifies French Romantic opera with lyrical melodies, vivid orchestral colour and dramatic vocal writing, and it helped consolidate Gounod's reputation while becoming part of the standard 19th-century operatic repertoire.
