Thrash Metal
Thrash Metal sprung up in the early 1980s, chiefly in the United States, when the punk ethos collided with heavy metal, albeit with slightly less whining about the government and a lot more guitar. Characterised by its rapid tempos, aggressive riffs, and lyrics that often tackle social issues, it sounds like someone trying to break the sound barrier whilst also conveying a very strong sense of urgency. It became the soundtrack for both mosh pits and wholly unnecessary haircuts, forever proving that speed and volume can inspire both chaos and camaraderie.
