Sophisti Pop
Sophisti-Pop emerged in the 1980s, particularly in the UK, when pop music decided it could wear a pair of reading glasses and occasionally reference a philosophy book. Characterised by smooth melodies, jazzy chords, and lyrics that prefer subtlety over shouting, it is like the music equivalent of sipping a gin and tonic whilst discussing Proust. Interestingly, this genre has become a cosseted niche, adored by those who appreciate a splash of sophistication in their pop without forgoing a good, cheeky chorus.
