Rocksteady
Rocksteady emerged in Jamaica in the mid-1960s as a rather cheeky transition from ska, slowing down the tempo just enough to make dancing slightly less frantic and a bit more romantic. Characterised by smooth bass lines, offbeat guitar strumming, and heartfelt vocals, it sounds like the musical equivalent of swaying gently whilst nursing a pint at a sun-soaked terrace. It laid the groundwork for reggae, proving that taking it easy can lead to some rather groovy outcomes and a lasting cultural legacy.
