Improvisational
Improvisational music took root in the jazz clubs of early 20th century America, where musicians decided that actually practising their instruments was so last century; instead, they would just make it up as they went along. Characterised by spontaneous composition, it often sounds like a delightful chaos, where melodies take unexpected turns while the audience wonders if they should be clapping or just slightly concerned. It has since thrived in various forms, with both seasoned pros and brave amateurs attempting to one-up each other on the spontaneity scale, often resulting in a musical game of 'who blinks first'.
