Gerry Rafferty was a Scottish singer-songwriter from Paisley, Renfrewshire, who began his career in the late 1960s in folk and rock groups before establishing himself as a solo artist in the 1970s; his work straddled folk rock, soft rock and pop. His songs combined storytelling lyricism and melodic hooks with increasingly sophisticated studio production, evolving from acoustic, folk-rooted arrangements to layered, soft-rock productions in the 1970s and 1980s, and several recordings have been used in film and television.
