The samplerfamily tree

How sampling moved from computer instruments to keyboards, racks and self-contained production systems.

The family resemblance

Samplers did not evolve along a single line of better fidelity. They branched by workflow: the computer instrument, the performance keyboard, the MIDI rack, the sampling drum machine and the integrated production centre. Each branch changed who could sample, where the edit happened and whether sound or sequence was the primary object.

Finding 01

Cost changes the shape of the instrument.

The Fairlight’s screen, keyboard and computer architecture made sampling part of a broad composition system. The Emulator retained the keyboard but narrowed the proposition. The Mirage pushed that form further down-market; rack samplers then removed the keyboard entirely and treated the sampler as a shared studio resource.

The SP and MPC branches made a different trade. They placed captured sound beside pads and a sequencer, so timing and arrangement became as immediate as sample editing. The family resemblance is therefore operational: each descendant keeps some part of “record, map, trigger and arrange” while relocating the rest.

This is a selective genealogy, not a claim of invention priority and not a complete list of commercial samplers. A node is included when it makes a workflow branch legible. Dates describe commercial introduction at year-level; parent links describe inherited working methods, not direct engineering descent.
