Fidelio is the only opera by Ludwig van Beethoven, premiered in 1805. The work blends Classical orchestral writing with dramatic vocal ensembles and choruses, combining lyrical solos and robust orchestration to convey themes of freedom and justice and marking a distinctive place in Beethoven's output as his sole stage work that foreshadows early Romantic dramatic tendencies.
