It combines late-Romantic orchestral writing with large-scale choral and solo passages, contrasts of texture and dramatic narrative, and early experiments with folk-influenced motifs and expanded orchestral colour, occupying a formative place in Mahler's early output as a bridge between his student works and his later symphonies.
