From the House of the Dead is an opera by Czech composer Leoš Janáček, completed in 1928 and first performed in 1930. A late, austere work in Janáček's catalogue, it employs speech-influenced melodic lines, modal and dissonant harmonies and lean orchestration to evoke the bleak atmosphere of a prison, marking a move toward concentrated, experimental dramatic writing in his late style.
