Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano is a cycle of twenty pieces for prepared piano by American composer John Cage, composed between 1946 and 1948. The work employs preparations—objects placed on or between the strings—to create percussive, metallic and gamelan-like timbres, and represents a key exploration in Cage's mid-1940s shift towards percussional sonorities and experimental treatments of piano timbre within the wider mid-20th-century avant-garde.
