The Great Service
Album by William Byrd & The Cardinall’s Musick & Andrew Carwood
The Great Service is a choral setting of the Anglican liturgy by the English Renaissance composer William Byrd, composed around 1600. It employs intricate polyphony, rich harmonic writing and contrasts between full-choir and solo-verse passages characteristic of late Tudor sacred music, and it occupies a notable place among Byrd's liturgical works and in the development of Anglican choral practice.
