Renaissance

Renaissance music flourished from the 15th to the early 17th centuries, primarily in Europe, as composers decided it was high time to trade in plainchant for something a bit spicier and polyphonic. Characterised by its intricate vocal harmonies, delightful word painting, and a touch of musical cheekiness, it often sounds like a choir having a very posh conversation whilst trying to outdo each other in musical gymnastics. This period also gave us the delightful notion that music could be not only sacred but also secular, proving that song and a good pint can indeed go hand in hand, if one is so inclined.
