Fidelio is an opera by Ludwig van Beethoven, first performed in Vienna in 1805. Musically it combines Classical-era orchestration with dramatic vocal writing and spoken dialogue from the singspiel tradition, and as Beethoven's only completed opera its 1814 revision is the definitive performing version and represents his sole contribution to the operatic repertoire.
