Die Fledermaus is an operetta by Austrian composer Johann Strauss II, first performed in 1874. The work is rooted in the Viennese waltz tradition with light, lyrical orchestration and comic ensembles, and it serves as a central example of late-Romantic Viennese operetta that illustrates Strauss's use of dance rhythms and melodic invention.
