Symphonie fantastique
Album by Hector Berlioz & Vladimir Golschmann & Orchester der Wiener Staatsoper
Symphonie fantastique is a programme symphony by the French composer Hector Berlioz, composed in 1830. The five-movement score uses an idée fixe to represent the protagonist's obsession and employs expanded orchestration — notably brass, percussion and novel effects such as col legno and offstage bells — to create vivid programme-driven scenes and to help define Romantic orchestral practice.
