Messiah is an oratorio by George Frideric Handel, composed in 1741 and first performed in 1742. It is characteristic of the Baroque oratorio, combining choral, solo and orchestral writing to set biblical texts with a wide expressive range, and it occupies an important place in Handel's late output and in the development of English choral tradition.
