The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book Two is a collection of keyboard preludes and fugues by Johann Sebastian Bach, compiled in 1742. Musically it comprises a sequence of contrapuntal studies traversing all 24 major and minor keys, demonstrating dense counterpoint, varied keyboard textures and formal invention, and it occupies a central place in Bach's mature output and in the development of Western keyboard technique and tuning practices.
