Symphony no. 8

Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse & Tugan Sokhiev

Symphony No. 8 is the eighth symphony by Dmitri Shostakovich, composed and premiered in 1943. The four‑movement orchestral work is characterised by sombre, dense orchestration, abrupt contrasts and an extended emotional trajectory drawing on late‑Romantic and modernist idioms, and it occupies an important place in Shostakovich's wartime output as an introspective counterpoint to his other compositions from 1943.
