Vespers
Album by Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff & The Choral Arts Society of Washington & Maureen Forrester & Gene Tucker & Mstislav Rostropovich
All-Night Vigil (commonly known as Vespers) is a choral composition by Sergei Rachmaninov, composed in 1915. The work sets Russian Orthodox liturgical texts for unaccompanied choir, combining chant-derived melodies, lush late-Romantic harmonies and prominent low bass writing, and it represents a culminating point in Rachmaninov's liturgical choral output while reflecting broader currents in Russian sacred choral practice in the early 20th century.
