This release is a collection of vocal and dramatic works by Claudio Monteverdi, composed in the early 17th century (c.1607–1625). Musically it exemplifies the early Baroque shift from Renaissance polyphony to a more declamatory, expressive approach, combining monodic writing, dramatic recitative and madrigal-derived techniques that point towards the origins of opera and the concerted vocal style in Monteverdi's career.
