Pines of Rome / Fountains of Rome

Album by Ottorino Respighi & Chicago Symphony Orchestra & Fritz Reiner

Pines of Rome and Fountains of Rome are orchestral tone poems by Italian composer Ottorino Respighi, composed in 1924 and 1916 respectively. Both works expand the orchestral palette with vivid orchestration, programme-like depictions of Roman landscapes and inventive use of orchestral colour, and they represent important steps in Respighi's development from late-Romantic idioms towards early 20th-century orchestral experimentation.
