Dubstep
Dubstep emerged in the late 1990s in South London, where some bright sparks realised that you could make folks dance by basically shoving the bass through a garden shredder. Characterised by its wobbly basslines and sporadic breakdowns, it sounds like a robot having a seizure in a nightclub, which can be quite exhilarating or, depending on your taste, utterly bewildering. Despite its polarising nature, this genre has infiltrated mainstream music, often leaving those who thought they couldn't dance wondering why their limbs seem to have developed a mind of their own.
