DMX was an American rapper from Mount Vernon, New York, who began his career in the early 1990s and was associated with hardcore hip hop and East Coast rap. His musical style combined a gravelly, urgent delivery with dark, autobiographical lyrics and shouted hooks, often addressing themes of struggle, redemption and faith within urban cultural contexts.
