Fred Anderson was an American jazz tenor saxophonist from Chicago who began his career in the 1950s and became associated with the city's avant-garde and free jazz movements. His playing combined elements of hard bop, free improvisation and blues-rooted phrasing, and he ran the Velvet Lounge club from the early 1980s to host improvised sessions that nurtured Chicago's creative music community.
