Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta / Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion
Album by Béla Bartók & Géza Frid & Luctor Ponse & London Symphony Orchestra & Antal Doráti
This album compiles two major works by Hungarian composer Béla Bartók, composed in 1936 and 1937. Both works exemplify Bartók's mature modernist language, blending folk-derived modes and irregular rhythms with rigorous formal design, inventive orchestration and prominent percussion and piano textures contrasted with dense string writing, and they occupy a pivotal place in his late-career exploration of percussive timbres and expanded instrumental colour.

First released: March 1969
