Geistervariationen

Geistervariationen is a set of piano variations by Robert Schumann, composed in 1854. The work presents a sombre, hymn-like theme followed by a series of terse, chromatically coloured variations that emphasise introspective textures and abrupt harmonic shifts, and it was written during a severe mental crisis shortly before Schumann's admission to an asylum, marking one of his final piano works.
