Salome is an opera by German composer Richard Strauss, first performed in 1905. Its score combines late-Romantic orchestration and chromatic harmony with vivid orchestral colour and highly demanding vocal writing, and it occupies a pivotal place in Strauss's operatic output and in the shift from nineteenth-century Romanticism towards early twentieth-century modernist and symbolist tendencies in theatre music.
