Symphony no. 5
Album by Gustav Mahler & Orchester der Wiener Staatsoper & Hermann Scherchen
Symphony No. 5 is a symphony by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, completed in 1902. The work is a large-scale late-Romantic orchestral composition characterised by a prominent funeral-trumpet motif, expanded brass and string writing, sweeping dynamic contrasts and intricate contrapuntal passages, and it occupies a pivotal place in Mahler's output as he moved from more programme-driven early works toward a more concentrated and structurally rigorous style.
