Songs of the Auvergne
Album by Joseph Canteloube & Jill Gomez & Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra & Vernon Handley
Songs of the Auvergne is a cycle of folk song arrangements by French composer Joseph Canteloube, composed between 1923 and 1930. The cycle adapts traditional Auvergne melodies for soprano and orchestra, using lush orchestral colours and modal, folk-inflected harmonies to evoke rural French song and reflect early 20th-century interest in preserving regional folk traditions within classical music.
