This collection of orchestral tone poems is by German composer Richard Strauss, composed between 1888 and 1905. The works exemplify late-Romantic orchestral writing with vivid programme-music narratives, bold chromatic harmony and expanded orchestral colour, and they occupy a central place in Strauss's development from a young symphonic poet towards the more dramatic, operatic idiom he pursued later in his career.
