The String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, D.810, commonly known as Death and the Maiden, is a string quartet by Austrian composer Franz Schubert, composed in 1824. The work is marked by a dark, restless character, dramatic contrasts, urgent rhythms and intensified chromatic harmony, with the slow movement cast as a set of variations on an earlier song, and it occupies a prominent place in Schubert's late output that helped bridge Classical forms and emerging Romantic expressiveness.
