Symphony No. 3 / Symphonic Dances
Album by Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff & Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest & Vladimir Ashkenazy
Symphony No. 3 and Symphonic Dances are orchestral works by Sergei Rachmaninov, composed in 1936 and 1940 respectively. Both pieces exemplify his late-Romantic style, characterised by broad lyrical melodies, dense and colourful orchestration, rich chromatic harmonies and rhythmic drive, and they occupy a late-career position that reflects his adaptation of Russian romantic traditions into a more concentrated orchestral approach after emigrating from Russia.
