Pictures at an Exhibition / Night on Bald Mountain
Album by Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky & The Philadelphia Orchestra & Eugene Ormandy
Pictures at an Exhibition and Night on Bald Mountain are a piano suite and a tone poem by Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky, composed in 1874 and in the late 1860s to 1880 respectively. Both works employ vivid pictorialism, bold modal and chromatic harmonies and dramatic orchestral colour, reflecting Mussorgsky's development within the Russian nationalist tradition and his experimental approach to form and harmony that influenced later orchestration and repertoire.
