The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet score by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, first performed in 1892. The music employs late-Romantic orchestration with vivid instrumental colour and dance-derived themes, combining elegant waltz writing and characterful divertissements, and it represents a key work in Tchaikovsky's output for ballet and in the development of orchestral ballet repertoire.
