String Quartets

Album by Joseph Haydn & Arne Nordheim & Béla Bartók & Engegårdkvartetten

String Quartets are a set of chamber works by Austrian composer Joseph Haydn, composed between the 1760s and the 1790s. Rooted in the Classical style and scored for two violins, viola and cello, these quartets emphasise conversational interplay, development of motifs and formal innovation, and they were instrumental in establishing the string quartet as a central genre in Haydn's career and in Western art music.
