Dido and Aeneas is a short English opera by the composer Henry Purcell, believed to have been composed around 1688 and first performed circa 1689. The work exemplifies Baroque vocal writing with choruses, dances and expressive arias, and is notable in Purcell's output and in the development of early English opera for its blending of dramatic recitative with French and Italianate stylistic influences.
