L'Orfeo is an opera by the Italian composer Claudio Monteverdi, first performed in 1607. Combining early Baroque monodic vocal writing, expressive recitative and instrumental ritornellos, it exemplifies the emergence of operatic drama and contributed to the development of dramatic music in the early seventeenth century.
