Symphonie Nr. 1 is the first symphony by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, completed in 1888 and first performed in 1889. The expansive late-Romantic score employs large orchestral forces, programme-inflected motifs, folk-inspired melodies and stark contrasts of mood and texture, signalling Mahler's shift towards monumental symphonic writing that would shape his later works.
