Symphony no. 13 (Babi Yar)

Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & Eugene Ormandy & The Philadelphia Orchestra & Tom Krause & Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia

Symphony No. 13 (Babi Yar) is the thirteenth symphony by Dmitri Shostakovich, composed and first performed in 1962. Scored for bass soloist, male chorus and large orchestra, it sets a cycle of poems that confront wartime atrocities and contemporary Soviet issues, combining sombre choral declamation, stark dissonances and folk-like motifs and marking a significant engagement with political themes in the composer's later output.
First released: 1970
