The Seven Last Words is a musical composition by Joseph Haydn, first composed in 1786. Originally written for orchestra for a Good Friday service and later arranged by Haydn for string quartet and as an oratorio, the work features sombre, contemplative slow movements rooted in Classical forms and illustrates Haydn's approach to liturgical and expressive instrumental writing in his mid-to-late career.
